the issue of challenge

The issue of challenge ~ In order for students to grow in ability there must be the presence of challenge. If the demands of the exercises presented in class correspond to the ability of the individual then the student will be challenged and motivation will stay high. In order to ensure this equivalence, the teacher should have a clear awareness of the students’ ability and of the demands of the exercises presented. If the dance lessons require a much higher demand than the students capability, the student will become discouraged, experience anxiety and loss of interest in class. Likewise, if the ability of the student surpasses the demands of the lesson then boredom will ensue and the motivation level of the dancer will decline. It is the responsibility of the teacher to assure that the demands of the exercises presented in class are relative to the students’ abilities.
