WORKSHOP WITH SHERRI WHEATLEY!
2-4pm

$30 prepay / $40 door (space permitting

Juxtaposition:
One of the defining characteristics of fusion bellydance is the contrast between slow gooey movements and sharp contrasting percussive movements in the form of pops, locks and tics.  Often the sharp movements are used as “punctuation” at the end of a long, milked out sentence or to accent a hit in the music.  As both paces of movement require honed muscle control, this workshop begins with specific drills and technique training.  We then move on to short combinations expanding on our drills to include level and space orientation variances (I am a huge fan of ‘pregnant pauses’ and the ‘micro level change’) as well as more intermediate layering.  As with all of Sherri’s workshops, we will also focus on the theatricality of movement and experimenting with breaks in the 4th wall.

About Sherri
An avid disciple of Heather Stants from Urbal Tribal Dance Company, Sherri is distinguishable in her urban-influenced serpentine stylization, an interpretation that stylistically embodies something approaching bellydance contortionism in its muscle control.  She is also an extremely physical dancer and can morph from one extreme physical state to the next in an instant.

In addition to performing as a soloist, Sherri finds creative inspiration in collaboration with other performers and dance companies.  Her dedication, professionalism and superb artistry has earned her a principal role with previously Los Angeles based Desert Sin, a critically revered experimental bellydance theatre company with a cult following.   She has also had the privilege of performing with other artistically acclaimed internationally performing groups such as Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque (including Elon Musk’s 40th birthday party and Justin Bieber’s managers 30th birthday bash) Zen Arts, Atash Maya directed by Sabrina Fox and The Living Garden as “Slither.”

Having relocated back to Arizona after 27 years in Los Angeles, Sherri continues to study dance in various incarnations and also teaches both local and international classes and workshops.  As an instructor, she is extremely thorough, enthusiastic and encouraging prioritizing a strong emphasis on conditioning and strength/flexibility training.  Sherri prides herself on creating the kind of dance education experience where students both thoroughly enjoy themselves and learn something substantial.

When not performing or instructing, Sherri can be found escaping to nature, working with TNR-focused kitty rescues and hanging out with her three fur children Maki, Rio & Schmetterling (cats consistently teach movement as most cat owners already know).
