Ensure successful experiences

Presenting lesson plans that are founded on achievable tasks is vital to the success of the student. Self-confidence and a sense of competence and achievement are experienced when students engage in actives that they will succeed in. Many years ago I took a workshop from a well-known Flamenco teacher in New York. He emphasized over and over again “Everyone can dance well within their level of ability”. This was a big “A-Hah” moment for me and I’ve since incorporated it into my fundamental approach to teaching. Even new students can dance well when they move within the framework of there current ability! It is important for teachers to design class activities with achievement in mind. This requires the teacher to be aware of the skill level of the students and to plan class lessons consistent with those levels. Be mindful of what I call the “flow factor”. This is a willingness to be flexible with your class plans and make on the spot, achievement oriented modifications if the planned lessons prove too difficult for the majority of students in class.
